ABOUT BRYAN

The City of Bryan TX  is the county seat of Brazos County and is located in West Central Brazos County, crossed by State highways 6 and 21.  Along with College Station, the home of Texas A&M University, the city is the urban center of Brazos County.

The area was settled by members of Stephen F. Austin's colony in the 1820s and 1830s.  In 1859, when Houston and Texas Central Railroad graded a railroad bed through the area, a nephew of Austin, William Joel Bryan, donated land for a townsite to the railroad.  The townsite was named in his honor and was platted that same year.  Many residents moved to the new county seat in the 1860s, and the first courthouse was built in 1871.  The city voted to incorporate in 1867, but did not formally do so until 1872.

The Bryan News-Letter became the first newspaper in the community in 1868, followed by the Brazos Eagle, which grew from a weekly publication to a daily one in 1913.

Subdivisions located in Bryan include
Allen Forest, Austin's Colony Beverly Estates, Briarcrest Valley Estates, Brookhollow, Carriage Hills, Copperchase, Copperfield, Country Club Estates, Memorial Forest, Oak Meadow, Park Meadow, Shirewood, Symphony Park, Tiffany Park, and Wheeler Ridge.

Private Country Clubs located here include Traditions @ Texas A&M  and Miramont

The Bryan Independent School District was established in 1877, though the first school was not ready until 1880.  As schools across the country began to desegregate, Bryan schools followed suit. The plan called for a one-grade per year desegregation. A new identity was formed for the students of Bryan the fall of 1971, when Kemp students joined those of SFA and became the Vikings of Bryan High School.   A second high school, James Earl Rudder High, is scheduled for completion soon and ready for opening in the fall of 2008.
